Socially distant Gala attandees

Gala 2020: Online and on Point!

As the world has grappled with COVID-19 and shelter in place measures, the social calendar has been, of course, wiped clean. However, when it comes to celebrating, where there’s a will, there’s a way. For the Hillcrest Platte County staff, Covid-19 didn’t have to mean an end to philanthropic get-togethers. We live in a magical virtual time and this was an opportunity to re-think how we could adapt our most important fundraiser of the year to a virtual, socially-distanced experience.  The result was our first-ever HPC Online Gala. And while we missed being together in person this year, this was an exciting new way to reach even more people to propel the HPC mission in body and spirit.

Our kind-hearted supporters, volunteers, donors, sponsors, staff, and board members became hosts in their homes in which they invited their friends, family, and colleagues. Participation on social media by sharing pictures and using the hashtag #HPC2020 was a fun part of the event! We wanted to show the world what we could do with a couple of right ingredients and a pinch of goodwill! Our video expert, Adam Carpentier of Apple Tree Films, pulled together video snippets on cameras, iPhones, laptops, and other devices to create a seamless and inspiring program that debuted on the GiveSmart website Friday, October 2nd. Then there were the logistics of an online silent auction. HPC staff and several volunteers gathered donated items from area businesses, and several volunteers crafted beautiful baskets. Our Thrift Shop employees helped secure donated treasures! As a result of this team effort, we had over 150 items listed in the silent auction.

The impact of our virtual fundraising surprised us for this first-time effort.  Whether it’s virtually or in person, the Hillcrest Platte County family of supporters shows up in significant ways to further our mission. And show up, they did! Participants welcomed the “online gala” into over 100 homes that October evening. Generous supporters opened their hearts (and wallets), bringing in over $120,000.

And while we’re sharing numbers, it’s worth noting the 2020 online gala cost virtually (no pun intended) nothing to put on. It turns out we didn’t need to spend a lot of money to help raise a lot of money for the HPC Mission: We offer support services for individuals and families who are homeless or insecurely housed to achieve sustainable independence! We think that was a blessing in disguise. God definitely had a hand on this Gala!

It’s never too late to give. If you missed the Gala and want to donate any amount, please call our office (816)382-3422. Thank you!
