Kinzer – HPC Adult Housing Success
When Kinzer first came to Hillcrest Platte County, he did not believe he deserved a place to live. He was recovering from addiction and rebuilding his life after incarceration, carrying the weight of a nonviolent felony that closed doors wherever he went. Even with no personal debt and a strong desire to move forward, housing felt out of reach. Referred to Hillcrest while trying to navigate life on his own, Kinzer arrived unsure, humbled, and searching for stability.
From the beginning, Kinzer showed up ready to work. While housing barriers were being addressed, he focused on what he could control. He paid off court-related debts, saved thousands of dollars, committed to budgeting, and treated every dollar with care. One important milestone came when he returned to court for his expungement hearing and stood again before the same judge who had sentenced him years earlier. Instead of fear or resentment, Kinzer chose honesty and gratitude. He thanked the judge for holding him accountable and shared how that moment helped lead him to recovery, to Hillcrest, and to a new direction in life. The judge recognized his progress, offered encouragement, and approved the expungement of his charges.
During his time at Hillcrest, Kinzer also received support for dental care and continued working toward his GED. More importantly, he learned to believe he was worthy of stability and care. Today, Kinzer is moving forward in property maintenance work. He is focused, dependable, and known for giving more than he takes. His story reflects the power of second chances and the life-changing impact of consistent support and community.
